200

Wow. How can this possibly be my 200th post? I'm not one for having a whole lot to say, so I find this rather remarkable. :)

What better way to mark the 200th anniversary of "Blessed Is The Mother Of Boys" than to dedicate this post to my boys?

Lately, they've been making me laugh... A LOT.

Nick is at an age where I totally get his sense of humor. He's growing up and has lots of insightful thoughts and conversations spilling out of his head all of the time. It's fun.

Nolan is still funny, just in the typical "gross 5th grade boy" kind of way. He thinks any ridiculous sound is hysterical and anything mentioning underwear is a knee-slapper. I don't get it. Boys will be boys.

Here's an example of how my boys make me laugh. They've been playing/singing the blues together lately... It's a riot. They walked all the way home from the bus stop the other day playing the blues. Nolan plays some great little riffs on the trumpet, while Nick spouts off bluesy phrases between the riffs. It's completely ad-libbed and I think it's hilarious. This video doesn't do them justice...but it's all I've got.

Nicholas also likes to give Nolan rides on his electric scooter. He volunteers to get Nolan to and from the busstop like a little taxi service. I love it. Not only does it save me from having to get Nolan, it gives them some good fun brother time.

I'm lucky my boys actually like one another. It makes for a pleasant household. I hope their relationship continues to grow and that they will always be close. Nothing beats a good, supportive friend... especially one who knows how to cheer you up when you're singing the blues!

Reading, Writing, and Making the World a Better Place...

Homework is not what it used to be...
Back in my day,
I remember studying from boring text books, writing occasional book reports, and jotting a few math problems down on notebook paper.
*
*
I did not find myself having to act out historical figures in front of my classes...
Creating fantastic imaginative "mock" inventions...
Or coming up with a way to make my community a better place...
*
But, Nick has.
*
A couple of months ago he was instructed to conduct at least ten hours of community service.
What a fantastic assignment, no? Teaching kids the meaning of giving back to your community is genius.
*
Nick thought long and hard over this task at hand. He has a special place in his heart for pets and knew he wanted to focus his attention in that direction.
Originally he wanted to volunteer at the local animal shelter, but found out they require helpers to be at least 18 years old.
*
Bummer...
So he decided to conduct a pet supply drive around the neighborhood and donate any goodies he acquired to the animal shelter.... But, not one person in the neighborhood responded to his cute little flyers posted on the mailboxes. LAME... My neighborhood is usually stellar in all other ways that I was flabbergasted when nobody gave a thing....
*
Bummer...
On to plan #3. Connor knows the owner's of a local veterinary hospital hoping Nick could put in a few hours cleaning or doing any odd jobs they had to help out the clinic. Sadly and understandably they can't allow minors around the animals for liability reasons.
*
Bummer...
Nick was feeling a little stressed and dejected at this point. So Connor suggested we hold a pet supply drive at the local grocery store. Genius! Luckily through my connections we were able to plop down a table and chairs and get to work in the store I've called "work" for so many years.
Honestly, I didn't know how well this was going to go. He kept his expectations low and tried his best to let the shoppers know what his mission was.
*
We were only there for a few hours but witnessed a myriad of very giving individuals. Everything from a lady who said she'd been laid off three times in twelve months but who insisted on emptying out her coin purse to help the animals in need, to another lady writing out a thirty dollar check to the local animal shelter. By the end of his three hour drive, Nick had collected a whole shopping cart filled to the brim with kibbles, treats, and everything the needy pets could put to use.
*
HE WAS ECSTATIC.

Our own kitties were ecstatic to see the loot come through the front door. Too bad they won't be sinking their teeth into any of those goodies!

We plan on taking the goods to the Humane Society on Thursday. I'm sure they will be more than able to use the food or donate some to local food banks to help less fortunate families that are having a hard time feeding their pets.

Nick wrote his report and learned a lot through this creative assignment.
It was a great lesson in planning, executing, and achieving his goal of helping the furry members of our community.

Way to go Nick!

Move over Martha Stewart...

Yesterday, I was feeling a bit like June Cleaver.
I had a couple loads of laundry humming in the machines upstairs...
My vacuum cleaner was warm from being put to use on BOTH floors...
I could hear the gentle slosh of the dishwasher working hard for me in the background...
And then there was a new sound introduced to my home that even got the attention of my lazy-snooze-all-day cats...

Oh yeah... I was in the driver seat of this bad boy-pushing the pedal to the carpet!

I don't think I've used a sewing machine since my 8th grade Home Ec class. But sewing must be like riding a bicyle, because I suddenly felt very comfortable as soon as my foot hit the pedal.
Connor bought me this sewing machine for my birthday (He would like it to be known that I ASKED for a sewing machine... He would NEVER buy a present like this otherwise). I've been wanting one for quite awhile, especially every time I see the price of curtain panels at the store... I just know I can create the same things for a fraction of the cost!

I decided to try out my theory and make a couple of pillows to adorn my lovely new/old fence board storage bench that I LOVE.

Look at what I made mom!
It was fun and I only needed one bandaid. :)
(I can't blame the machine for that one, it happened when I was hand sewing the buttons on.)

I'm pretty smitten with myself. What should I make next? Curtains for our new kitchen? Perhaps an apron for my ultra messy cooking habits? Maybe a bandaid box cozy? :)
